What happens if you fail a class at Berklee? ›

Students who fail to meet or exceed any one of the SAP standards for the first time will be placed on suspension warning. Students in suspension warning status are given one additional semester of enrollment and financial aid eligibility to meet SAP standards.

Berklee College of Music students must meet the following requirements to qualify for graduation: Attain at least a 2.70 cumulative GPA in major courses. Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00.

Basic Repeat Policies

You may repeat a course only if you received a grade of D+, D, D-, F, or no pass (NP) in your first attempt of the course. You can only repeat a course one time to replace a grade. Grades in third attempts of a course will not be calculated into your GPA, but will be shown on your transcript.

Consider repeating the course. Over 90% of colleges allow undergraduates to take a failed class again to improve their grade. Depending on the school, the new grade may replace the F on your transcript — or both grades may appear, with the new grade replacing the F in your GPA calculation.

Pass/Fail Classes – The Basics

Typically, a student's GPA is not affected if she receives a Pass, but she will earn credit for the course. A Fail normally counts negatively toward the student's GPA, but some schools, such as the University of Wisconsin, Madison, do not count the F toward the GPA.

In most grading systems, an F carries no points toward your GPA. If you fail a class, your GPA will take a hit, potentially dropping significantly depending on the number of credits the failed class carries. Not only can a failed grade lower your GPA, but it can also have other repercussions.
