Ingredients
- Whole wheat flour – 3 cups
- Melted butter or coconut oil – 2/3 cup
- Sugar – 1/2 cup (adjusts up or down based on preference)
- Milk- 1/3 cup
- Baking powder – 1 teaspoon
- Raw Eggs – 2
- Chopped cranberries, raisins or shredded coconut – ¼ cup (optional)
Other: Oven, oven tray and baking sheet (parchment or aluminum foil)
Direction
- Preheat the oven on bake to 275°F
- In two separate bowls combine the wet and dry ingredients
- Using a whisk or spatula add the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Mix thoroughly until a dough is formed
- You want dough that is soft but not sticky- if you find the dough to be sticky work in a handful or two of flour
- Roll out the dough to about half inch thickness
- With a cookie cutter or sharp knife, cut the dough into bite size pieces
- Place some parchment or aluminum foil on an oven tray, grease lightly. Place the cut dough on the sheet
- Bake for 25 minutes, change the oven setting to broil (to brown the top), leave to broil for another 25 minutes.
- If the chin chin isn’t brown enough at this point (oven settings vary) continue to switch between bake and broil at 10 minutes intervals until the desired golden color is achieved
- If you are one of the lucky ones with an oven that can bake and broil at the same time- set the oven to do both from the unset and remove when chin chin is golden brown (~40 minutes)
Allow chin chin to cool before serving
Enjoy baked chinchin with a side of homemade mango juice
Store left over chin chin in an airtight container or a ziploc bag.
Happy cooking foodies!

Yes you can
AbbyMarch 8, 2015 at 1:00 pm - Reply
Try using Rice and Corn flour instead, with a little mix of potato starch to give the dough some elasticity. If you can find a gluten free flour with the mix, even better! For gluten free range a good mix of flour works best instead of just one.
9jafoodieMarch 9, 2015 at 7:39 pm - Reply
Thanks for the addition
ChichiMarch 8, 2015 at 12:04 pm - Reply
What about gluten free chin chin? Do you think this would work with almond or coconut flour?
AbbyFebruary 14, 2015 at 3:58 pm - Reply
woooow super! I’m sooo anxious to try this recipe so much I don’t mind doing it at 9:45pm UK time. However, what do you mean by broil? I’ve heard “bake or grill” not broil, so I’m assuming you mean grill?
Also pleaseeee (i’m begging) try to include measurements in kilograms, really helpful :-) for your fans who don’t use cup measurements. 3 different websites have given me 3 conversions for 2/3 cup of butter :-( I think i’ll settle for 150g, cross my fingers and hope it works!
9jafoodieFebruary 14, 2015 at 4:51 pm - Reply
Broil is thesame as grill. I will add grams for all our baking recipes.
9jafoodieFebruary 14, 2015 at 4:53 pm - Reply
1 cup of butter is about 230 grams.

I tried this recipe last night and the result is quite yummy! I increased the sugar by 1/4 cup, added 2tsp of nutmeg, and I baked it for about 30 minutes on each side (I flipped them instead of broiling them!). Have you ever tried baking chin chin made with all purpose flour?
9jafoodieJune 4, 2014 at 2:34 pm - Reply

Okay..i just tried this in two batches. The first batch burned after broiling 15 minutes. The second batch was okay after broiling for ~5 mins on low. Maybe its my oven though.

Oven settings definitely vary. It was a great idea to divide the chin chin into two.
