Are reservations required for Hearst Castle? ›

Tickets may be purchased at the Visitor Center upon arrival depending on availability, but advance tour reservations are strongly recommended. Reserve online now or call Hearst Castle Reservations at 1-800-444-4445.

After viewing an episode of "Great American Castles," I decided this might be a good choice. It costs $100 for the four of us.

If you're short on time, the Grand Rooms Tour is the perfect way to see the best of Hearst Castle. It includes a visit to the castle's gardens, pool, and grandest rooms, including the Banquet Hall and Roman Pool. The Grand Tour is the most comprehensive option and includes access to all of the castle's public rooms.

Reservations can be made, changed, or cancelled at ReserveCalifornia.com or by calling 1-800-444-4445. Changes to tour date or time: no additional charge if made in advance. A non-refundable registration fee per ticket and a $7.00 per cart fee will be charged for cancellations.

Physical Requirements. The Grand Rooms Tour is 70 minutes long and includes approximately 140 steps, both up and down, and 2/3-mile walk. An Accessibly Designed Grand Rooms Tour is also available for those who may have difficulty standing and walking for extended periods of time. It is wheelchair accessible.

Child-carrier backpacks and front-packs are allowed. To protect the historic estate, food and beverages are not permitted on the hilltop, with the exception of bottled water.

All Hearst Castle tours spend about an hour at the house, but that turns into a little more than two hours when you include the bus trip up and down the hill.

Photography for personal enjoyment is encouraged. However, due to operational impacts, photography related to birthdays, engagements, weddings, graduations, etc. is prohibited. Tripods are not allowed either inside the buildings or on the grounds, but monopods are in both locations.

Be sure to arrive at least 25 minutes before your scheduled tour time. Arriving early will give your kids time to use the bathroom and have a snack before your Hearst Castle tour begins. You have to line up to get your tickets and armbands and then you'll board a tour bus for a 30 minute drive up to the castle.

The world-renowned house museum will reopen to the public on May 11, after being closed for two years following the COVID-19 pandemic and severe rainstorms that damaged the access road to the castle in early 2021.
