A pretty good-sized airline known as American disagrees with you. The 'why not give it away' approach doesn't work for BE routes, either. There are numerous perspectives on upgrade entitlement and fare integrity.

Silver Medallion members are entitled to upgrades. I don't understand the sudden discussion to take this benefit away. A pretty good-sized airline known as Continental and their new bedmate United will offer upgrades to Silvers.

Why should Silver Medallions not get upgrades anymore? After all, they are accommodated last after other tiers.

Well as a former NW GM who only banked ~11k for 2009 (almost all on CO when we had those benefits), I did not receive any letters or notice of a soft landing to Silver, so I wasn't expecting it either. I'm not all butt-hurt over it, as I vowed in November to never step foot on another DL flight again until they get their act together. On to greener pastures...cya DL!

Good. With no soft landing you are much less likely to act on your withdrawal symptoms! :D

I guess my 23k of activity last year not counting the 25k they gave me means I could not qualify! That's good because now I will not be tempted to ever fly DL again! Much better that way!

+1 I have found MUCH greener pastures as an AA EXP! Now that's a program that works for me. And I am easily getting the premium awards I want when I want them! Buh bye Delta and the rest of HellTeam!

Whereas I had nearly 46,000 MQM and got demoted to Silver from Platinum.

I guess the good news is that I've already got 21,000 MQM banked for 2010 and will make Gold without even trying.

I'm in ATL. Captive audience.

Pretty interesting that so many DL Platinums with under 15k MQMs last year get soft-landings to DL Gold this year while those with over 40k MQMs last year end up as Silver at DL.

I don't think anyone here will ever understand why some people get soft landings and some don't. I always have had the attitude that no one is entitled to one, including me. If I get one, it is a welcome gift. If it really matters, I do a MR and take out of DL's hands. Otherwise, I don't think it is right to complain that I did not get a soft landing, hard landing, rough landing or whatever.

DL provided soft landings to Medallions in specific markets.

And of course you are correct. Those markets were probably selected since DL felt enough competitive pressure from other airlines to try to keep its customers from considering other options. I will admit I was fortunate to be in such a market (LAX).

No doubt. I had an average of 150k EQM per year before the Best in Class regime took over.

BoraxoMar 3, 2010 12:56 am

Just received my card indicating a soft landing from Gold to Silver. As Gold was the result of a status match by NW, I have no complaints :)

Of course, I have zero EQM on DL over the last few years, but hopefully I'll be able to get a little use of the limited perks... or maybe use for a CO status match ;)

P.S. UA does NOT offer soft landings, you can literally go directly from 1k to general member. Now in the past there have been offers to buy back status for an absurd fee...

.... including accounts with addresses listed in rural parts of the country where DL runs the biggest or only show at the nearest airport.

Why do so many folks who are "never flying Delta again" complain when they didn't get to keep thier status? If your decision is already made, why does it matter?

Honestly, I don't get it? When AA dropped me to "nada" status that was fine. I was not planning to fly them so what good would it have done to be "soft landed"?

apollomsMar 3, 2010 12:56 pm

3 years of being a medallion then nothing....especially since it wasn't my choice not to fly this past year.....they still have yet to respond to my email....where as when I was a plat up until monday, they would respond within 12 hours......

it either needs to be all or none in my opinion....either give soft landings or don't.....don't pick and choose

GUWonderMar 3, 2010 5:07 pm

AA provides soft-landings to all AA elites, and that is something people should consider in terms of which airlines reward their customers more/more consistently.
